Kongelige Danske Fiskesamling

context
Since the 19th century, flora and fauna have been made accessible to a wide audience in public aquariums across Europe. The marine animals exhibited in small aquariums fascinated people simply due to their uniqueness. Observing marine life and gaining insight into their world continues to captivate people to this day.
task
For 'Kongelige Danske Fiskesamling', which is complemented by an extensive collection of alcohol-preserved specimens, an exhibition venue is to be designed on the harbor promenade in the heart of Copenhagen.
concept
The core concept of the design is an aquarium tower at the center of the building, around which the exhibition tour for visitors revolves. The exhibition begins on the top level, accessible by elevators. This journey offers ever-changing views into this otherworldly environment as well as stunning views of Copenhagen’s harbor.

detailed explanation of the concept

In section, the distinct levels of the strictly vertically organized aquarium structure can be identified, each providing space for the unique habitats of marine life. These levels vary in height and reference the different layers of the ocean. The journey begins at the water’s surface with an open tank, before visitors descend into the depths of the sea. As one moves further down, the openings in the aquarium grow progressively larger. Framed by deep recesses, these openings offer diverse views into the underwater worlds while maintaining a separation between these two realms. They become curated images where visitors remain in the role of silent observers. By incorporating intermediate floors for technical facilities, a sequence of spaces with varying heights is created along the descent, offering visitors a dynamic and immersive experience as they explore the underwater environments. The final observation post is located in the basement, which visitors reach after completing the exhibition tour, with a brief stop at the foyer. Here, the Undervand Restaurant is situated, offering views into the harbor basin where native fish can be observed. This unique shift in perspective is designed to be accessible even to those who do not visit the collection, as the restaurant is not part of the exhibition. This special view is made possible by the exceptionally high water quality in Copenhagen. Additionally, the temporary exhibition is located in the basement, providing the option to visit it separately from the main exhibition.
This work was designed as part of my diploma thesis at the Chair of Public Buildings at the Technical University of Dresden under the supervision of Professors Ivan Reimann and Thomas Müller. Special thanks go to Dr. Ulrike Schoper for her support as well as to all my friends and family.
